FAQ : PolySoft can not be used by restricted Windows users

Symptom

Like for any Windows software admin rights are required to install the PolySoft application. If a Standard user with limited rights tries to start the software, an error message occurs.

Reason

To start the PolySoft application Modify privileges for the User Management System database (UMS.MDB) is required. Standard users do not have the permission to modify this file. The file is located in the directory C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Thermo Electron/PolySoft.

Solution

  1. Log on as Administrator user,
  2. open the Windows Explorer and
  3. select the entry Folder Options... from the Tools menu,
  4. switch to tab page View and
  5. activate the option Show hidden files and folders, as Application data is a hidden directory.
  6. Press OK to use the changed option.
  7. Browse to the Application data directory of PolySoft (v. Picture 1).

  1. Right click on the directory entry PolySoft and
  2. change to tab page Security.
  3. Select the group Users from the list Group or user names.
  4. check the Modify permission for the Users (v. Picture 2).
  5. Select OK to save the change.
  6. If You don't want hidden directories to be displayed in the Explorer reverse the setting done in steps 3 to 6.

Log in as a standard User and check whether the software can be started now correctly.
